The Hazara Stud Farm bred Machiavellianism won a classic double when he ferociously fought out with Borsalino and managed to prevail by a neck in the Gr 3 Deccan Bookmakers Colts Championship at Malakpet on Sunday. For trainer Vittal Deshmukh, the victory of Machiavellianism was particularly pleasing as he became the first trainer in Hyderabad to win the both the Colts and Fillies Championship in the same season. Vijays Pride and Machiavellianism had also won the championship for fillies and colts at Bangalore and both these events were Group I events. Pradeep Chouhan as usual showed that he is the master of all that he surveys in Hyderabad as he timed his challenge to a nicety and was forceful at the finish.

Machiavellianism had finished ahead of Borsalino on the two occasions that he had met Borsalino over trips up to a mile. Since Borsalino had thrashed him in the Kingfisher Derby, Borsalino went into the race as a favourite though the support for Machiavellianism was indicative of the confidence of the supporters of the local horse. The distance was a minus factor for Borsalino as also the fact that he was taking on a superiorly fit horse who had the benefit of a run during the season. This in the end appeared to be the deciding factor.
Borsalino was pushed to take over the running by jockey Sandesh with Plenipotent attempting to cut pace to disturb the rhythm but it had no effect as half way through the former had gone away from the reach of the designated pace-setter. Borsalino raced about five to six lengths ahead of the rest but jockey Chouhan sensing the danger quickly had Machiavellianism improved places from the rear to be in striking reach of the front runner. Maths Bay took the turn deep and went miles wide. Borsalino doggedly fought on in the straight and it took an all-out effort on the part of the horse and the jockey in the entire length of the straight to get past the front runner in the final moments of the race. Despite travelling on the outer edge of the track, Maths Baby ran on to finish one length adrift of the battling duo of Machiavellianism and Borsalino.
