The Hazara Stud Farm bred Machiavellianism prevailed in an exciting finish in the Gr 1 Colts Championships, the second classic of the season on Sunday. The victory helped the trainer Vittal Deshmukh to record his first ever Group I double as last week Vijay`s Pride had won the Fillies Championship. The horse owned by late Pratap Reddy in partnership with Vijay Kumar Gupta and his son measured the field with a powerful run on the wide outside to win at the expense of Shivalik Hero and Plenipotent. Silver Birch who did the entire running was not far behind. Jockey Imran Khan made the best of the chance ride to record his first success in this event.

The Hazara Stud Farm bred horses have been exceling in races held all over India. Last year Lovely Kiss had won the Fillies Championship. Dandified and Pedalo gave a big boost to the stud farm by their performances. Toroloco, sired by Hazara Stud Farms resident stallion Rebuttal, had won the Bangalore Winter Derby.

The Colts Championship field appeared like a minefield despite the presence of Hachiko who had done well in his first season at Mumbai. The fact that he had faltered over a mile trip had put a question mark about his capability over the extended trip. Also it had been time and again been proved that horses rarely clicked in a classic race with the benefit of a mock race at this stage of their career why they lack the physical maturity of a seasoned performer.

Hachiko was the favourite but he was not backed with any degree of conviction. Shivalik Hero, Silver Birch, Borsalino, Plenipotent were the others who were in the betting at longer odds. Machiavellianism had no takers as punters also chose to desert him like his pilot Chouhan had done and looked for the winner elsewhere. Silver Birch attempted to win the race the hard way by taking charge and opening up a break of a few lengths with fancied runners Plenipotent, Southern Opinion, Borsalino, Hachiko, Shivalik Hero racing prominently while Machiavellianism who was drawn the widest circling the field at the final bend to come into contention at the top of the straight.

Silver Birch carried on but the front running effort told on his reserves as he weakened in the final furlong giving way for Plenipotent with Shivalik Hero in hot pursuit. In the meanwhile, Hachiko had faded out of contention while Borsalino was not picking up speed. Machiavellianism moved with a flourish on the wide outside and had the front runners covered in sight of the winning post to win by a shade less than a length from Shivalik Hero, Plenipotent, Silver Birch and Borsalino. Jockey Imran Khan was obviously delighted with the performance and he kept waving his stick well after the winning post and Borsalino who was pulling up behind him ran into the winner causing jockey Sandesh to be unseated. The jockey suffered a bleeding injury on his nose but fortunately escaped without any major blow.
