Vittal Deshmukh trained Vijay Damini was an odd exception of an overwhelming favourite winning on the opening day of Hyderabad Winter Races at Malakpet on Sunday. The nine event card was dominated by outsiders. Apart from Vijay Damini, the other strongly fancied winners were Hard Kingdom and Cheetah He Jeetha.

By virtue of her impressive credentials, Vijay Damini was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the big field of 14 runners. Despite the outermost draw, Vijay Damini had enough speed to take over the running within the first 100 metres and led all the way to finish well clear of Mission Chief who displaced Caligatae from the runner up berth, picking up momentum in the final furlong.
